What is Sinusitis?
Sinusitis, also known as a sinus infection, is a condition that involves the inflammation and congestion of the sinuses. As the name may suggest, sinusitis is caused by an infection in the sinuses. This condition typically develops in unison with colds and other infections, although it can develop alone in some cases. When the sinuses become infected, they can swell and become congested with mucus and other fluids. This can quickly cause symptoms that include:
- Breathing difficulties
- Runny nose
- Sinus headaches
In order to effectively treat sinusitis, it must be properly diagnosed. At Bakersfield Sinus Center, we offer sinusitis diagnosis and treatments to help patients find relief.
How is Sinusitis Diagnosed?
Sinusitis produces symptoms that are fairly common amongst colds, allergies, and other infections. For that reason, it can be difficult to self-diagnose. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, we recommend visiting a medical professional to receive an accurate diagnosis and ensure that you receive the proper treatment.
Sinusitis is primarily caused by bacteria infecting the sinuses, producing congestion and swelling of the tissue. When you visit Bakersfield Sinus Center, we assess your symptoms and perform an examination to determine the source of your sinusitis. Once we determine the primary cause, we can recommend a treatment that will work for you.
How is Sinusitis Treated?
The treatment of your sinusitis will depend on your diagnosis.
In most cases, we’ll recommend balloon sinuplasty, a non-surgical procedure, for the treatment of sinusitis. During the balloon sinuplasty treatment, we will carefully insert a small balloon into the sinuses. Once in place, the balloon will be inflated to open up the sinuses and the nasal canals. As a result, any mucus or other fluids that has built up in the sinuses will be able to drain easily. This should alleviate congestion and reduce swelling for rapid relief.
In rare cases, sinusitis can be caused by nasal polyps, which are small growths of tissue that block air flow and cause congestion in the nose and sinuses. If have a nasal polyp that is causing sinusitis, we may recommend a polypectomy procedure to have it removed.
Can Sinusitis Be Completely Cured?
At Bakersfield Sinus Center, our goal is to help you achieve an improved quality of life by providing long-term relief from sinusitis. However, the cause of your sinusitis will determine the extent and duration of the results you are able to achieve.
If your sinusitis is caused by a nasal polyp, polypectomy will permanently remove the polyp to alleviate your symptoms and reduce your risk for developing sinusitis in the future.
If your sinusitis is caused by a buildup of mucus or other fluids in the sinuses, you can expect quick relief from the balloon sinuplasty treatment. However, it is important to note that treating sinusitis cannot prevent it from developing again in the future. Since there are many conditions that can cause sinusitis, it is not possible to prevent it from recurring with a single treatment.
